SUMMARY: Transcriptional and Epigenetic Control of Tumor Progression and Metastasis: Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition (EMT) and Beyond
Position is available in the Rauscher Laboratory immediately to study the transcriptional control mechanisms, epigenetics and chromatin biology contributing to tumor progression and metastasis. The first Project involves the Snail/Slug/Zeb master regulators of EMT during acquisition and epigenetic maintenance of the metastatic and stem cell phenotype. The laboratory has recently discovered key novel components of the chromatin-bound transcriptional machinery which are required for repression by these zinc-finger proteins. (see: Dev. Cell. 14:424, 2008, Mol. Cell. Biol: 28: 3198, 2008, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA, 107:2938, 2010, Cancer Res. 70: 4385, 2010, Mol. Cell. Biol. 30: 5071, 2010). Work in progress has identified kinases dedicated to this pathway which mediate assembly of these components and are good molecular targets for therapeutics. The second Project involves the BAP1 tumor and metastasis suppressor gene, originally discovered by the Rauscher laboratory (Oncogene 16:1097, 1998), which has now been rediscovered as a chromatin directed de-ubiquinase that is mutated in multiple sporadic and hereditary tumors types (Nat. Genet. 43:688, 1018, 1022. 2011). We will use forward/reverse genetic approaches, biochemical purification of macro-molecular complexes/proteomic approaches, structural biology approaches and functional analysis of components in knock-out mice and mouse models of cancer metastasis. Successful candidate will be trained in a highly interactive environment of top cancer biology and chromatin biology researchers at The Wistar Institute and The University of Pennsylvania (http://www.wistar.org/research_facilities/geneexpress.html).
We will exploit this system using forward/reverse genetic approaches, biochemical purification of macro-molecular complexes/proteomic approaches, structural biology approaches and functional analysis of components in knock-out mice and mouse models of breast cancer metastasis.
QUALIFICATIONS: We seek highly energetic, ambitious candidates with a recent Ph.D. and training in molecular cancer biology, biochemistry, pharmacology and developmental biology. We offer highly competitive salary and benefits package.

Dean of the College of Engineering and Science |
|
Job Description |
The University of Detroit Mercy (UDM), a Catholic University in the Jesuit and Mercy traditions, invites nominations and applications for its next dean of the College of Engineering and Science (E&S). With a distinguished history of educational accomplishment and a long-standing tradition of service to the community, UDM and the College of E&S are vibrant resources for the city of Detroit and the state of Michigan.
In 1990, the University of Detroit (1877) and Mercy College of Detroit (1941) consolidated their resources to establish the University of Detroit Mercy, now providing a single clarion voice as the largest Catholic university in Michigan. UDM enrolls over 5,500 students and offers a distinctive array of more than 100 undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs through their School of Architecture, College of Business Administration, School of Dentistry, College of Engineering and Science, College of Health Professions, College of Liberal Arts and Education, and the School of Law. Service is deeply embedded in the fabric of the University, having spanned generations of students and faculty; it provides a platform for UDM’s effectiveness for educating in the urban context.
The new dean’s opportunity for academic leadership is profound. As chief academic and administrative officer of the College of E&S, fully engaging the E&S faculty and academic programs, the dean will lead a program currently celebrating the Centennial anniversary of its founding. The College of E&S is especially proud of its enrollment of minority and female engineering students, which constitutes 25% and 33% of the student body respectively. Building on previous achievements, E&S will look to the dean to reinforce the College’s distinctive “teacher scholar” ethos, to enrich the opportunities for individual faculty research and scholarship, to energize enrollment efforts, particularly for engineering students, and to sustain and expand vital linkages to the external community, especially in the areas of fundraising and new program development.
The dean’s care and creativity to see that UDM’s central values are represented in the work of E&S, while advancing the college’s distinctive contemporary mission, will be important. The dean will be expected to lead the development of a vision for E&S’s future, while also reflecting the larger goals of a developing overall academic plan for UDM. The strength of UDM’s shared governance ethos is defined by long standing collective bargaining agreements and the more recent development of a McNichols Faculty Assembly. In concert with the leadership of the president and the provost, the dean will be the chief advocate for the E&S program and will serve collaboratively on the Academic Leadership Team (council of deans).
Prospective candidates are encouraged to review the Dean’s Search Profile, which contains specific information about the application process and additional insights about the agenda for leadership in the College of E&S at: www.udmercy.edu or www.agbsearch.com.
Although applications will be accepted until the time a new dean is selected, candidates should plan to submit materials by February 21, 2012 in order to receive the most favorable consideration. All inquiries should be directed to:

Summary
The AirFire Team of the U.S. Forest Service seeks a research air quality engineer interested in wildland fire smoke and air quality issues. Early-career through established scientists are encouraged to apply. The position is located in Seattle.
Air Quality Engineer
The AirFire Team of the USDA Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station, Pacific Wildfire Sciences Laboratory in Seattle, Washington seeks to fill a permanent, full time air quality engineer research position. The position falls within the range of GS-12 through GS-14 pay grades ($73,420 - $134,118) with final grade determination based in part on the applicant’s qualifications.
The AirFire Team’s research program includes climate dynamics, synoptic and mesoscale meteorology, and air quality issues related to forestry, with particular emphasis on forest fires (http://www.airfire.org). As a key member of the Team, the scientist in this position performs research related to smoke dispersion and transport from forest fires, and forest fire impact on regional haze. The goals of the work are improved understanding of the physical and chemical atmospheric processes unique to forest fires, and development of tools or training that convey both existing and new technology to fire and smoke managers, land management agency administrators, and policy makers for decision support.
The major duties of this position are:
? Improving Forest Service ability to respond to new and existing regional haze rules, the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS), and the impacts on air quality and visibility from biomass smoke. The work includes basic research on factors controlling emission variability, terrain interactions, non-convective transport, and plume dynamics, as well as applied research in the form of model development and testing, assessing air quality impacts from multiple sources at a variety of scales, developing realistic emission scenarios under a variety of climate and burning conditions, and developing ways to use monitoring networks and remote sensing for quantifying impacts from fire.
? Perform research to increase our understanding of the role of fire in air quality issues, including real-time prediction of smoke impacts; regional haze; climate interactions with emissions and dispersion, atmospheric impacts on particle and gas emissions and resulting concentrations. This work includes, among other things, coupling Lagrangian with Eulerian models, and developing methods that help reduce negative impacts of smoke from wildland fire.
? Leading work on development, testing and evaluation of the BlueSky smoke modeling framework (http://blueskyframework.org). This aspect of the position involves design and creation of new models and tools to better predict smoke impacts, and leading new field experiments to collect data for evaluation and development work. Field work can require flying, driving, and short-notice deployment in wildfire rapid response situations.
The candidate must have a Doctorate degree in air quality engineering or a related field. Candidates with excellent writing, speaking, and teaching skills are sought since they must be able to communicate their work to both the scientific and land management communities. Leadership roles on past projects, including a proven ability to obtain research funding are important. Experience with meteorological and air quality computer models such as WRF, HYSPLIT, FLEXPART, SciPuff, and/or CMAQ is necessary. Familiarity with current wildland fire consumption and emission models (such as CONSUME, FOFEM, FINN, or equivalents) is highly desirable, as is experience with the BlueSky smoke modeling framework. Strong skills using LINUX-based operating systems; programming in languages such as C/C++, Fortran, and Python; and operating particulate monitoring instruments is essential.
